What is public policy and does your nonprofit need a strategy?
Public policy isn’t just for governments, academics, and policy experts. As nonprofits have knowledge and experience to share, they can - and should - play an active role in public policy. But what does it really mean to do public policy? And how do you create a strategy and tactics that are impactful?
Speakers:
Karim Bardeesy
Karim Bardeesy is a public service leader who has worked at the intersection of public policy, politics, journalism and academia for the last 15 years. He is a distinguished visiting professor and special adviser to the president at Ryerson University, where he is launching a new Leadership Lab. He was previously the deputy principal secretary for the Premier of Ontario, the Hon. Kathleen Wynne, and served as executive director of Policy for Premiers Wynne and Dalton McGuinty. He has worked as a journalist, an editorial writer at The Globe and Mail and an editorial assistant at Slate magazine, and was a DiverseCity fellow with the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance. He has taught narrative and leadership at the University of Toronto’s School of Public Policy and Governance, and has a B.A. from McGill University, and an M.P.P. from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Julia Drydyk
Julia Drydyk is the managing director at Public Interest Strategy & Communications, a social enterprise that helps to build effective and progressive public policy through research, community engagement, and strategy design. For over 10 years, Julia has worked with multiple levels of government and the community services sector to design and implement sustainable policy solutions to complex challenges. She has contributed to advocacy and policy development from both inside and outside of government with a primary focus on poverty-reduction issues.
Prior to returning to Public Interest in 2017, Julia's was the senior policy advisor in the Office of the Hon. Dr. Helena Jaczek, Ontario Minister of Community and Social Services, where she provided strategic policy advice toward the transformation of Ontario’s social assistance programs and the design and implementation of Ontario's Basic Income Pilot.
This webinar will focus on:
- Highlighting the role of public policy in creating social change
- Developing an understanding of how policy is shaped in Canada
- Gaining a greater sense of how decisions about policy are made both on paper and in practice
- Understanding whether your nonprofit needs a public policy strategy and how to go about it
