New to Team ONN 

We’re excited to welcome Tara Mazurk as ONN’s new Communications Coordinator! Tara will not only bring you the latest in nonprofit news, but she will be focusing on a new project related to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). This project will provide tools and resources for Ontario’s nonprofits to help them comply and lead the way on creating a fully accessible province. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto and is also a consultant and writer for Canadian Artists’ Representation (CARFAC) Ontario, a leadership team member of ONN’s Connect the Sector, and the Communications Co-Chair for the Canadian Arts Coalition. More to come on this project and how your nonprofit can get involved!

ONN Policy Updates

ONN in “Exploring the Potential of Social Finance in Canada”

ONN was featured in the report, Exploring the Potential of Social Finance in Canada, from the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities. ONN’s Cathy Taylor spoke about the impact of current tax codes on nonprofit organizations which prevent organizations from generating revenue to put back into their missions and savings. ONN recommends that the government wait on hybrid corporate legislation. Read more in the full report.


Grant Opportunities

Lawson Foundation - July 14 at 1:00pm

The Active Outdoor Play grant aims to increase children’s opportunities for self-directed play outdoors through projects that address barriers and inform systemic change. The submission deadline is Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 1:00 pm EDT. 

Youth Action Plan- $55 million over three years 

Ontario’s enhanced Youth Action Plan aims to support high-risk youth and additional high-needs communities across the province. The Youth Opportunities Fund is an $8.7 million annual program to help fund collaborative and grassroots groups serving young people who face multiple barriers to economic and social well-being. The fund is directed by the Ontario Trillium Foundation and will expand beyond the Greater Toronto Area. See the update.

Policy News

Credit card fees

The House voted down a motion asking Parliament to take steps to reduce credit card transaction fees charged to merchants, and to permit the merchant to disclose the transaction costs to consumers. Read more in Imagine Canada’s update.

11 Bills Passed in June

The Ontario government passed 11 bills and introduced 9 more. See the full listing.

Ontario Music Fund now permanent

The Ontario government will now provide $15 million annually to support the music industry. Current recipients include nonprofit and community festivals.

Consultation on Municipal Acts- by Aug. 7

The Government of Ontario is reviewing three key elements of municipal frameworks, including acts to strengthen the financial sustainability of local governments. The Municipal Act, the City of Toronto Act, and the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act are each under review. You can submit comments online, email or send your feedback. Voluntary accessibility certification program in the works

The Ontario government will be consulting with stakeholders, including disability advocates and nonprofits, to develop a voluntary, third-party certification program to recognize businesses and organizations that have championed accessibility.

Infrastructure Priorities- by Sept. 18

The province is asking for input on the design of new infrastructure programs and a framework to prioritize needs for communities and regions outside the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. 2015 Social Enterprise Survey for Ontario 

Last chance to add your input to the 2015 Social Enterprise Survey for Ontario, which is being conducted by the  Canadian CED Network, partnering with Simon Fraser University and Mount Royal University! ONN encourages nonprofits doing social enterprise to participate. The contributions of nonprofits engaging in social enterprise are important and growing, but the sector has not been widely studied or understood. Your participation is critical to informing policy recommendations to enhance support for the sector. Email pchamberlain@ccednet-rcdec.ca to get the survey link.


Charities’ Day on the Hill

Imagine Canada led a group of 35 charity leaders and supporters to raise the profile of the charitable and nonprofit sector at the federal government. Read more on the strategy (with resources to share!) and they plan to make this an annual event. This month, Imagine Canada also released a discussion paper, “Charities in Canada as an Economic Sector”.
